Tso Moriri Lake falls within the Changtang Wildlife sanctuary and offers a scenic place of peace. It is an altitude of 4,522 m and is also the largest of the high altitude lakes entirely within India. This lake measures about 28 km in length, 3-5 KM wide and has around 100 feet average in depth. It is surrounded by barren hills and view of snow-covered mountains is pleasant.

Tso Moriri has also been declared as a wetland reserve.

The lake gets water by springs and snow-melt from the adjacent mountains. Most of the water enters from streams from north and southwest. The water of the lake is also alkaline.

The summer temperature varies from 0 degree to 30 degree C while the temperate in winter remains in between -10 degree C and -40 degree C.

Best time to visit Tso Moriri Lake

Summer is the best time to visit the place. May, June, July and August are the best months. The lake is mostly frozen from January to March and there is no point of visiting the place in winters.

How to reach?

The lake is located at the to the southeast of Leh and is at a distance of 240 kilometres. The road is also in good condition. You can reach the Tso Moriri lake from from the Pangong Tso via the remote Changtang region. The road trip to Tso Moriri Lake is also considered to be one of the most beautiful drives in the Ladakh region.

Where to Stay?

In place of staying near the lake, it is better to stay near to Leh and take a day trip to the place and the sanctuary. If you still want to stay nearby, you can avail the camping facilities in Korzok village and Nubra Valley.

There are no eateries or food stalls here. So, carry your own food for the trip to lake.
