With the elevation of 1970 meters above the sea-level, this small-town hill-station is located to the Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh. The hill station has a mesmerizing and irresistible scenery that can make you visit this place again and again. It is characterized by the old-world charm, enchanting landscapes, pine-clad valleys, large green beds of meadows filled with lively flowers, magnificent misty mountains and note-worthy natural views in the world. The town was named after The Earl of Dalhousie, who was the British Governor-General in India. Attracting to its scenic beauty and realizing its importance as a heat-escape solution, the general considered this town as a regular summer-retreat.


In 1854 the town was considered as the retreat to escape Indian summer. It was a popular holiday destination for British owing to its peaceful, cool and calm climate. The five neighboring hills- Bhangora, Bakrota, Terah, Potreyn, Kathalagarh were acquired by the Chamba rulers to convert the town into a hill-station, which was achieved soon and Dalhousie became a favorite spot as hill-station for most of Indians.


The people living in Dalhousie possess the culture of religious, God-fearing, Kumaoni people. They prefer to live their lives with simplicity and away from the hustle-bustle of metropolitan life. Folk dances such as Kuluvi folk dance depicts the rich cultural heritage, vibrant lifestyle and way of living of the local people. There are several fairs and festivals that carry enormous religious worth and shows the native’s belief in divine powers. During these fairs, the spirit of Dalhousie is visible as simple rural folks take delight in the songs, dance, laughter, and celebration. The climate of the place influences the lifestyle of the native people greatly. Owing to the cold climate all year round, warm clothes are preferred by the locals. The Himachali cuisine is found here, which is simple Chapati, Dal, vegetables gravy, curd, and many other variations.
