Gokarna is a small town located in Uttara Kannada district of the state of Karnataka. The city is also known as temple town and the main temple here is known as Mahabaleshwara.. There are also many other temples all over the small town. Gokarna is also one of the seven important Hindu pilgrimage centers.

The place is about 238 km north of Mangalore and 483 km from Bengaluru.

The town also house few less explored but beautiful beaches, so it attracts lots of tourists. Many people now come here to enjoy the less crowded beaches. So, this place is no longer just a. centre of pilgrimage, but majority of tourists are visit the town to offer prayers and worship to Lord Shiva.

This is a pilgrimage centre, so it doesn't have much bars and pubs, still the town has good night light to enjoy. There are poolside bar for calm evening. You can also enjoy in open beaches under the starlit sky.

History of Gokarna

Gokarna word is basically the combination of two Sanskrit words "Gau" and "Karna". So, Gokarna means cow's ear. As per one of the Hindu Epics, Lord Shiva emerged from the ear-shaped union of two rivers Gangavali and Aghanashini. The existence of Mahabaleshwara shivling is linked to Ravana in Tretayug.
