Majuli is India's largest river island that is also believed to be world's largest river island by many. It is in Asam and is also the first river island that has been made a district in India.
In the beginning of the 20th century, it had an area of 880 square kilometers. With the time, the area of the river island has shrunk because of several geographical changes including the growth of Brahmaputra river.
The river island has population of close to 2 lakh that includes tribals, non-tribals and the scheduled castes. It has 44 villages.
For going to this river island, you have to take the Ferry service from Jorhat city. Ferry service operates six times a day to connect Majuli to Jorhat city.
