Mawlynnong

Mawlynnong is a small village in the East Khasi Hills district of an Indian State Meghalaya. Mawlynnong is located at a distance of 90 km from Shillong. This place is known for its cleanliness. Mawlynnong is said to be the cleanest Village in Asia.

People in Mawlynnong live a very clean life. All houses have functional toilets and the whole village has bamboo dustbins installed at several places. Plastic bags are banned and smoking is prohibited. If any person doesn't follow the rules, he is charged heavily. People clean their houses and also step out to sweep the roads.

Apart from being cleanest Village in Asia, this place is also know for its 100 percent literacy rate and a society that puts women ahead.

This village is inhabited by Khasi tribe. Children here gets the surname of heir mother. The wealth is also passed down from the mother to the youngest daughter of the family.

The Living Root Bridges in Mawlynnong are also popular and have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. These bridges are made by connecting the aerial roots of rubber tree.
